An exhibit covering 700 years of children's books opened September 27th at the Newberry Library in Chicago. Highlights of the Newberry collection on display include "the first illustrated edition of Aesop's Fables (1485); the first edition of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865); a nineteenth-century collectible story, La Fille de L'Exile, that is similar in format to Pokemon cards; and ABCs from 1544 to 1992".
This informative exhibit runs until January 17, 2009 and features a number of free lectures and roundtables by leading children's literature scholars, including Michelle Martin, Roberta Seelinger Trites, and Patricia Crain, who will close out the exhibit with her talk entitled, "Babes in the Wood: The Death of Childhood and the Birth of Modern Children's Literature."
Information on the exhibit and talks can be found at the Newberry Library Website.
